During the early Rome days, slavery was such an important custom in the Roman society. They were distributed all over the Mediterranean communities. Some were war prisoners, some sold themselves or someone had sold them by their families due to dept and poverty. Even some slaves due to a criminal act they have done.

Most of the slaves worked as farmer. Even the smaller farms had to have slaves to finish their task. Some lived in their homes, some lived in tents/cabins near their landowners farm. In order for nothing to go wrong, most landowners would hire a freeman to look over the slaves and make sure that nothing goes wrong and that the slaves are doing their job.

Slave labor was the second leading factor that affected the small farmers because of large estates landowners. The large estates landowners took over the small farmers. This affected the agricultural community of the Italian peninsula because the landowners of the large estates had a better and a cheaper advantage by using slave labor to do their worker which lead to them taking over the smaller lands.

Bigger land owner did have the advantages over the smaller land owner as they had more number of slaves to work in their farm thus they can have more productivity and more production thus smaller land owner could not stand to bigger land owner and has to surrender their land to larger land owner due to debt.
