Question

ievention takes the form of subsidizing e's access to products-think of financial aid to colege students, for example. eaple in the US think that govenment should move from producing education There are other markets where govenment in to subsidizng access One form that subsidy could take is government providing vouchers to parents Parents would use the voucher to help pay for their child's education in a private school. After i receives the voucher, the school would turn it in and be paid by a local or state govenment Today there is a ively debate between people who think K-12 education should be delivered publcly and people who think quality and efficiency would be higher t government provided vouchers and the education was delivered by private schools Some of these quality and efficiency arguments can be based on material we covered this week. Price competition between private schools will pressure each one to produce efficiently. Competition for students will lead private schools to offer programs of interes to parents and their children Answer the questions below and make use of the sources supplied. Be sure to cite you sources n your answers. 1 Explain whether a potental exit by students with vouchers wil lead to the improvement of public schools 2. Discuss whether the implementation of vouchers wil lead the best students to leave public school, which could lead to a decline in éducation for the students left behind in the public schools 3 Consider what might happen to the students who use vouchers to leave public schools in order to attend private schools. How might their academic erformance change as a result ol switching? 4. Finally, think about the impact of a voucher system on the students in an urban setting Describe whether all families would have an equal opportunity to access education Your final product will be a paper that: Addresses each of the four questions above in total. Is APA formatted . . The body is to be 2 pages minimum. . The requirements for your assignment are: 1 Answer each question fully 2 Define the overall subject df each question 3 Cite at least three (3) resources from this week's matenals Students: Be sure to read the criteria and review the grading rubric on the next page, by which your paper/project will be evaluated, before you write, and again

Explanation / Answer

ans 1. The idea of a student moving from a public school to a private school may seem like it would hurt the public school when in reality it may be a good thing. Data has shown that following the years of adopting the choice programs their per-student spending increases (Friedman Foundation, 2015). There may be some revenue loss if many students transfer but that is true regardless of if the student transferred to a different public or private school. Regardless of that fact the per-student spending limit is increases which means more training aids, better equipment, possibly new computers or programs to assist with learning and in most people’s eyes this can be seen as a great improvement.

ans2. The voucher programs are designed in a way that allows minorities such as low income students and students with disabilities to qualify to receive a voucher. This does not line up with the best students leaving public school, however studies have shown that “NAEP scores show that higher socioeconomic status students do marginally better in public schools, while poor students do slightly better in private schools (Vouchers, 2000). It seems that the child’s upbringing and involvement of parental figures will have more of an impact on who is deemed to be the “best students”. Those students who have parents with college degrees may have more educational support and motivation driven from their home life. What some are failing to realize is that based “on the culture, practices, and outcomes at an inner-city private school are more likely to be similar to those of an inner-city public school than to a private school in an affluent suburban community (Vouchers, 2000). After reading this there is no “best student” there are those students who are raised in a culture that nurtures their learning and are engaged with their schooling. Those who have disengaged parents regardless of if they are attending private or public school may find their grades suffering as a result.

ans 3.      There is a chance that a student who leaves public school for private school will do better academically and there is a chance that they may not. There is risk associated with every choice that we as parents or adults have to make regarding children’s education. “In Milwaukee, just 13 percent of voucher students scored proficient in math and 11 percent made the bar in reading this spring. That’s worse on both counts than students in the city’s public schools. In Cleveland, voucher students in most grades performed worse than their peers in public schools in math, though they did better in reading” (Vouchers Don’t do Much, 2013, Simon). The list goes on for states who have students utilizing vouchers to attend private school are doing worse than their counterparts in the public school system. Those who are attending private school whose parents are paying for out of pocket generally have the advantage of being exposed to educated people for their entire lives. Those low income families who are attending may not have the education level to assist or support their private schooled child. This is sad because all kids should have the opportunity to receive the same education so that everyone stays on an even keel until it is time to branch into their adult years, then they could choose their own individual paths.

ans 4.

The voucher system in an urban setting is a very big deal as it can get some kids out of the tough public school hallways. If the voucher system continues then there will be no equal opportunities for all students in an urban area. The reason for this is the number of vouchers that are available is small, only 15 states and the District of Columbia participate in the voucher program, and in the years 2015-2016 there were over 153,000 students using a state sponsored voucher (School Voucher, Harvard). This is not enough for all students, on top of this only certain children would be eligible such as those from low income families, or those with disabilities. This leaves those who are living a middle wage lifestyle to scrape their bank accounts to attempt to pay for private school or to settle for public school much like the rest of America. Though it is not a completely fair process it is still a fascinating system designed to help the youth of our future to better themselves and to change their future.

Children’s education should be important to everyone, not just the parents of the children. They are our future politicians, principals, presidents, CEOs, you name it these children will be populating those positions, I feel it in our best interest to ensure that they have the education necessary to be responsible for this great nation that we serve. The voucher program is a good supplement to those who would not otherwise be able to afford private school for those who qualify. If one qualifies and does not receive one they should continue to try for future school years.
