Why? 0.1112 points Save Ans Question 10 Which article brought together social, cultural and economic factors, along with science, in the discussion of mass extinction 2

Explanation / Answer

7. The authors have focused on amphibians in this study as it is the only major group that may be at risk globally. One-third of amphibian species are threatened with extinction in near future and this rate will accelerate as they have narrow habitat and distribution. Therefore they are the most vulnerable group and the study have therefore focused on them for answering the question of whether we are in the middle of a sixth mass extinction.

8. Wake, 2008.

In this article, the author has dealt with the concept of mass extinction, the previous events, focused case study of amphibians, common cause, and so on. All these issues have been discussed in detail and have been empirically supported with evidence. The other article is just a consolidated reporting of many studies and fails to go to a greater depth.

9. Wake, 2008.

The author provides a lot of details on how anthropogenic activities are resulting in the extinction of species and goes much deeper in explaining the role of global warming in extinction. The other article just mentions the causes like pollution, deforestation and climate change but fails to substantiate.

10. None.

Unfortunately, both the articles have failed to bring together the social, cultural and economic aspects of the issue along with the science. Wake has tried to report on few related issues but fails to address all the factors. Wake's paper is almost entirely and scientific enquiry and does not address the socio-economic aspects. The BBC report also fails to mention the socio-economic consequences and limits itself to publishing the results of few studies briefly.
