1.Thomas Paine's Common Sense is an argumentative essay. What argument is Paine making? How does he structure his argument? What do YOU think is his most persuasive point and why? NOTE: You MUST include the exact quote that you found the most persuasive.

Explanation / Answer

In Common Sense, Thomas Paine argues for American independence and creation of a democratic republic, which became an instant hit and sold millions of copies in first weeks. He states with society, religion , monarchy, colonialism and freedom .

Starts by differentiating government and society. Society, according to Paine, is constructive which is an effect of people joined hands to achieve something, On the other side, government is an institution in order to protect society from vices of society itself, Which originated as a result of people understood their on evils and made government.

After this Payne started to discuss on monarchy and hereditary. According to Payne, man was born and created equally, and the distinction that has arisen between king and subject is an unnatural one. The conclusion Paine reaches is that the practice of monarchy originates from sin, and is an institution that the Bible and God condemn.

Paine says that as a colony of Britain, America lacks respectability on the international scene. They are seen simply as rebels, and cannot form substantial alliances with other nations. In order to prosper in the long term, the colonies need to be independent. Paine says that, by declaring independence, America will be able to ask for the help of other countries in its struggle for freedom. For all of these reasons, Paine says it is imperative and urgent that the colonies declare independence.

My favorite quote from the essay is: “O ye that love mankind! Ye that dare oppose, not only the tyranny, but the tyrant, stand forth! Every spot of the old world is overrun with oppression. Freedom hath been hunted round the globe. Asia, and Africa, have long expelled her.—Europe regards her like a stranger, and England hath given her warning to depart. O! receive the fugitive, and prepare in time an asylum for mankind.” – by which he calls his fellow Americans to rise up and states a cause of revolution in order to achieve freedom
