Trade barriers create an atmosphere or protectionism which is more harmful for the country implementing it than any other in the long run.

Any country being stringet with trade barriers becomes one in which no other country would want to import from to maintain its own fiscal balance. This would mean that technological advancement would heavily sink in such an economy having high trade barriers.
