U.S. Food Imports "USDA ERS Food Environment Atlos, USDA, 2 imports/#All tables in one file. May 2018 www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/us-food-imports/us-foodExplanation / Answer
The world of the 21st Century has agreed to one basic fact, this that being protectionist in its approach towards trade will lead it into being a third world country which is highly non respected by the developing nature, and will find hard to grow technologically and economically.
The United States of America was probably the first to realise the fact that markets cannot function with such an approach, that technological and economic advancement would require all nations to be at a similar platform, and while the cost of imports might vary from country to country, these should not be discremenatory in nature.
Trade barriers create an atmosphere or protectionism which is more harmful for the country implementing it than any other in the long run.
Any country being stringet with trade barriers becomes one in which no other country would want to import from to maintain its own fiscal balance. This would mean that technological advancement would heavily sink in such an economy having high trade barriers.
The benifits and disadvantages that firms face from tarrifs has been highlighted in the paragraph as follows.
Apple has been able to give high quality products to its consumers due to lesser control of the government and lesser tax imposition than other products, this has allowed for major technological advancements since 1976, in which Apple has become the pioneer and has been able to change the entire market.
On the other hand the case of Beckland Gas Inc clearly indicates the negative impacts that trade barriers to goods like steel bring.
This indicates that trade barriers should be minimised in the United States and it should only be restricted to goods that are off national importance, further it should be reviewed from time to time since of them change over a period of time.
