SUPERFUND SITE is the name given to the environmental program established to address abandoned hazardous wastes. A superfund site are areas that are threatened by hazardous waste.
LCP CHEMICALS GEORGIA SUPERFUND SITE is located in Brunswick, Georgia over 813 acres of land. The agency for toxic substances and disease registry(ATSDR) found out there are contaminants in soil in the dryland area of this particular superfund site and surprisingly some areas of soil at this site do contain harmful levels of mercury, hydrocarbons, lead and dioxins. Mercury leaked from cells is the major source for contamination of water and all these factors degraded severely. These mercury leaks from Superfund site which didn't soak into the ground ultimately mixed into the turtle river. From the year 1919 to 1994, the LCP chemical site was occupied by a series of industrial operations. Finally the plant was shut down in 1994 but the damage has been done to the surrounding areas by then and in 1996 this site was listed as a Superfund site.
Recently in 2016 the former owners of LCP superfund site decided to spend $30 million on cleanup the site. But even after several cleanups I personally do feel that these dangerous chemicals and contaminants can easily harm people's health if this superfund site were developed for residential purpose in future.
