Expressions of Gratitude Microeconomics ECON 2023 Goals: • To show appreciation to those who have been mentors/role models to us • To become aware of how our gratitude can impact others After reading the following story, please contact someone who has been a mentor/role model to you. Express your gratitude and communicate to them how they made a positive difference in your life. Big Ed ... When I heard you suggest that each of us, in order to become really tough-minded, needed to learn to tell those closest to us that we really loved them, I thought it was a bunch of sentimental garbage. I wondered what in the world that had to do with being tough. You had said toughness is like leather, and hardness is like granite, that the tough mind is open, resilient, disciplined and tenacious. But I couldn't see what love had to do with it. That night, as I sat across the living room from my wife, your words were still bugging me. What kind of courage would it take to tell my wife I loved her? Couldn't anybody do it? ... I found myself clearing my throat and starting then stopping...Then suddenly, I got up, walked across the room, nervously pushed her newspaper aside and said, 'Alice, I love you.' For a minute she looked startled. Then the tears came to her eyes and she said softly, 'Ed, I love you, too, but this is the first time in 25 years you've said it like that." ....I realized that all the things you'd talked about that day - real management nuts and bolts - took on extra meaning, and I could get a handle on how to apply them if I really understood tough-minded love.. .... I really changed the way I work with people. I began to listen more and to really hear. I learned what it was like to try to get to know people's strengths rather than dwelling on their weaknesses. I began to discover the real pleasure of helping build their confidence. Maybe the most important thing of all was that I really began to understand that an excellent way to show love and respect for people was to expect them to use their strengths to meet objectives we had worked out together... Question 1. My mentor was a professor who taught me microeconomics. He helped me gain a thorough understanding of the subject as I had problems in a few areas. He explained concepts with real life examples to better my understanding. He had graphical examples of the concepts and gave me tests immediately after he was done explaining them. Although I struggled at first, I gradually progressed and became a top scorer in the final exam. I don't think I can ever forget what I learnt from him.
Question 2. I went to his office room and thanked him personally and told him how much his teaching contributed towards my high score. I also bought him a coffee from his favourite coffee shop along with some doughnuts. I gave him a thank you card in which I mentioned how much his teaching helped me. To this day, he has the card I bought him in his shelf along with several other cards that others had given him for his contribution.
Question 3. My mentor/professor was very happy as I bought him his favourite brand of coffee. He did not expect that. He is used to getting cards but no one ever thought of getting him a coffee, which he often cites as an example of a good while teaching us economics.
Question 4. I felt I owed him this much at least and having expressed my gratitude I felt happy and satisfied.
Question 5. Yes, the experience with my mentor has taught me that a role of a mentor in the life of a student is of great importance and value. This is because it differs from a regular teacher whose focus and method of teaching is equal for all students, while a mentor focuses on a student's weaknesses and strengths and helps build his strengths and overcome his weaknesses. A mentor has to understand his student thoroughly and design a plan of action suited to the mentoree's need.
