1. Ptolemy and Copernicus both developed their view on the design and working of universe that challenged the church’s view about universe. However both of them differed on some points.In case of Ptolemy’s universe, he believed that universe was geocentric with earth at its center and all the celestial bodies’ rotated around earth. His belief was that sun, planets, moon and stars all rotated around the earth which was at the center of the universe and remained still with no movement at all.

Copernicus had a different opinion then Ptolemy he believed that the universe was heliocentric with sun at its center and all other bodies rotated around the sun and the moon rotated the earth. Also he believed that the sun and starts both remained still and earth, moon and planets orbited the sun. Both of them believed that all the bodies’ rotated in circular motion and do not follow elliptical path. Hence both of them differed in their theory on the above mentioned.

2. The Catholic Church was of the view that the universe was geocentric with earth at its center and all other bodies rotated it. The view of the church was that earth is a special place with humans as special beings and above all creatures. It meant that you as humans were god’s best creation and deserved the best place to live upon. All other heavenly bodies were subservient to earth and humans. They were influenced by Greek and Roman philosophers in their view and gave several arguments against the movement of earth.

Copernican model although laid down the foundation for heliocentric model. He openly wrote that it was not earth that was still but the sun was at the center of the universe and earth rotated around the sun. He further elaborated that earth also rotated on its own axis as well. This he said was the reason in mistakes occurring in calculating the astronomical movement of the heavens. Thus he fully changed the view of the church which was geocentric to that of heliocentric.

3. Ptolemy and Copernicus both should be praised for what they did to contribute to the field of science and knowledge. They were the few brave ones to go ahead and study the universe and compare between the church and realty. They developed hypothesis that were more accurate and correct then the prevailing view which no one dared to question. Their works created desire and courage for many others like Galileo for further enhancing the field of science. Their works stirred the minds of the people to come out of ignorance and reach for the scientific knowledge. Their books and works promoted the growth and development of science in Europe and other places. These books became part of studies amongst several other schools globally. These developments changed and developed our view about science and created a desire for learning amongst the ignorant masses. They eventually changed the Church’s view about science. Hence we can conclude that they were great thinkers, philosophers and scientists of their time whose contribution to science cannot be neglected.
