It has been observed that aggregate labor force participation rate has increased in the post World War II period at a tremendous rate. Both the male and female labor force participation rates have increased but the increase in the participation rate of women outpassed the increase in the participation rate of men . Thus, share of women in the labor force has progressively increased. The gender gap has also significantly narrowed in the past few decades. By 2000, the gap between the share held by women and by men narrowed to just 7.0 percentage points.

The increase in the female labor force participation rate can be attributed to increase in the demand of family incomes and increased standard of living of people. Also, friendly labor market policies especially for women also attributed to this increased participation rate. However, as compared to other developed nations of the world, the female labor force participation rate is still low and more labor market friendly policies are needed to increase this participation rate.
