Heading 1 Heading 2Sube Sulbt Font Paragraph Mineral-Calcium Carbonate 3. The mineral Garnet is generally found only in medium to high grade metamorphic rocks, and not in other common igneous or sedimentary rocks. What is the reason for this? 4. The basement rocks beneath Wake County and some sections of Johnston County consist of gneiss schist, amphibolite, quartzite, phylite, and others). What type of plate boundary may have been present in North Carolina at the time these rocks were being formed? 5. Is the same plate boundary active today in North Carolina? What major geologic event was the likely cause of the regional metamorphism that produced these rocks? 6. 7. The image below shows a sample of quartzite from Sheep Mountain in Montana. The darkened lines represent the original bedding preserved in the rock before metamorphism KLL 8 6 5Explanation / Answer
3.major garnet varieties are pyrope, almandine , andradite, grossular etc. every mineral having a specific condition under which they fromed. for the formation of garnet moderate to high pressure temperature conditions are required. and we know that sedimentary rocks formed by a weathering , erosion and compaction. while igneous rocks are fromed by the cooling and crystallization of magma when it arrived on the surface. ,magma having a temperature but not pressure . but metamorphic rocks are formed when prexisting rocks ( igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic) comes under high pressure and temperature conditions. under these conditions physical and chemical properties of the rocks has been changed. this is called metamorphism. and these conditions are perfect for the formation of garnet. . pressure requirement is around 3 kbar and temperature around 600 c for the formation of garnet.
4. these rocks are fromed by the regional metamorphism where temperature pressure level has been so high. so we can expect there would be a convergent plate boundary because high PT conditions are occur at the convergent plate boundary.
5. north carolina area divided into narrow mountain, blue ridge mountain and appalachian chain.this all area is settle down , so we can say that that plate activity is not activity in that area.
6. when directed pressure and heat act togeather in the presence of migrating hydrothermal fluids, properties of pre existing rocks has been changed its called regional metamorphism regional metamorphism occurs at great depths like root regions of the fold mountain . temperature and pressure conditions are so high here. these conditions produce at the convergent plate boundary, when two plate collide with each other , this time high heat and pressure generated , or at the root regions of the folded mountains occurs regional metamorphism and at the time of orogenic event.
