Three functions of a normal telescope are making object brighter(light gathering), resolving, and magnifying.

Light gathering= it is proportional to the square of the diameter of the aperture.

Resolving= it is proportional to the diameter of the aperture.

Magnification= the image produced by the telescope’s optical train must be made large enough so that we can see details in it.
