Question
In our modern world, Africa continues to be a source of raw materials. In a continuation of the imperialist model, raw materials are taken from Africa and then shipped to manufacturing plants where they are used to produce goods bought by consumers in industrialized nations.
It would be good for us to discuss this in greater detail.
Begin by looking at the information found in the chapter about Africa's raw materials and natural resources. Then look at your possessions. Try to find answers to these questions:
What goods do you own that can be traced back to Africa (in terms of raw materials)?
What region of Africa did these raw materials come from?
What were the working conditions of the people who mined/harvested/reaped the raw materials?
Where were the raw materials sent for manufacturing?
Then think about the consequences of what you have learned. What responsibility do we as consumers have for what is happening to poor workers in Africa? Is there anything that can be done about it? Etc.
Explanation / Answer
1.As Africa has almost all kind of raw materials so it is very hard to find the goods.I mean in my prospective as Africa has raw material of diamond, gold, salt, uranium, bauxite and petroleum so the goods will be the products from these raw material like diamond and gold ornaments, all alluminum products ,petroleum products like veseline, fuel oil etc.
2.we get copper from Katanga
Diamond from sierra leone,Angola,Botswana
Petroleum from Sudan,Nigeria,Lybia,Egypt
Uranium from Niger,Nambia and South Africa
3.The raw materials are generally present at very remote locations in Africa so to mine it the mine owners use the manpower of Africa. That means they hire the poor African people for mining and with out caring about the security or the appropriate payment they use them like labours .So we can conclude that the raw material is mined and reaped by the blood of poor Africans and we are enjoying the goods on the blood of them indirectly .
4.The raw materials were sent to the western countries like USA,Canada etc but it is also sent to the countries like China,Japan,Switzerland etc.
