For example, movies, which are usually shot with a wide-angle lens, have an aspect ratio that is typically 16:9, which means that the width of the image area is almost twice its height. HDTV (high definition television) is a television display technology that provides picture quality similar to 35 mm. movies with sound quality similar to that of today's compact disc. Some television stations have begun transmitting HDTV broadcasts to users on a limited number of channels. HDTV generally uses digital rather than analog signal transmission. However, in Japan, the first analog HDTV program was broadcast on June 3, 1989. The first image to appear was the Statue of Liberty and the New York Harbor. It required a 20 Mhz channel, which is why analog HDTV broadcasting is not feasible in most countries.
High-Definition Television, a new type of television that provides much better resolution than current televisions based on the NTSC standard. HDTV is a digital TV broadcasting format where the broadcast transmits widescreen pictures with more detail and quality than found in a standard analog television, or other digital television formats. HDTV is a type of Digital Television (DTV) broadcast, and is considered to be the best quality DTV format available. Types of HDTV displays include direct-view, plasma, rear screen, and front screen projection. HDTV requires an HDTV tunerto view and the most detailed HDTV format is 1080i.
Difference between HDTV and TV:
High Definition Television, or HDTV, is the current trend of all TV sets on the market today. An HDTV set simply means that it is able to display images that have a much higher resolution, when compared to standard TV. DTV stands for Digital Television, and though they often go together with HDTV, they are totally independent technologies, that can be used in tandem or independently. Digital Television covers the digital transmission of moving images and sound, and is the successor to the current analog TV, that is widely in use today
The common misconception that people make with HDTV and DTV, is that you only need to buy an HDTV set to get high definition video. An HDTV set can process DTV signals, but to maintain backwards compatibility with older systems, it also accepts analog signals. Even if you have an HDTV, but you are still receiving analog TV signals, then you still have standard definition. Although HD is feasible on an analog transmission system, the huge bandwidth requirement spelled its early demise, and all HD videos nowadays are on DTV.
Another common misconception is that having DTV and an HDTV set would directly imply that you are seeing an HD video on your screen. This is also quite false, as there are other factors that need to be considered in order to get HD video. First-off, the video source from the broadcasting company needs to be in HD, as you cannot have HD output without HD input. It is quite easy to know if you have HD video, as most companies are very eager to flaunt their ability to broadcast in HD. The next key factor is the transmission of the video signals from the broadcasting company to your TV set. Even if you have an HDTV receiving DTV signals from a station that broadcasts in HD, you could still be getting an SD signal if the cable company is carrying the signal in SD.
In order to get a high definition picture, you must satisfy all these requirements. At the heart of all this, is the DTV transmission system, as it makes the transmission of HDTV signals possible
