Question
Go to http://www.storyofstuff.org/ Go to “Resources, "select "Movies," and then select the last movie to view "The Story of Stuff." This movie examines our current materials economy from extraction, to production to distribution to consumption to disposal. As you watch the video, think about the interrelationship between the three P's: people, the planet, and prosperity. In your post to the discussion, identify your responses 1, 2, and 3 and respond to each question below:
1) Describe an example (in Annie Leonard's analysis) of an interrelationship between any two of the three P's, express your agreement or disagreement with her statements and explain why.
2) Discuss one fact that most surprised you, and discuss the implication(s) of this new information.
3) Identify at least two items presented in the film to which there are opposing viewpoints, yours or those obtained from other sources like YouTube or online, and explain why you agree or disagree with these differing viewpoints. Show any outside sources (links, which will be checked).
Explanation / Answer
1) According to Annie Leonard's analysis the people are false guided to belief that the consumption of goods will make there living standard better. The lifestyle they follow, if it has lots of consumption then the individual will be moving towards the prosperity. Which is not the case as the consumption will not only stress out planet for the resource supply but also have some serious health and environmental impacts. I am in agreement with Annie Leonard's analysis as the points mentioned were real. There are several proofs like climate change, global warming which are pointing towards the same direction.
2) The resources we use are robbed from the third world countries. This fact is surprising as it means the price we pay for these resources is never enough as it is never basically ours. The use of resources of third world countries will not only leave them short in resources but it will also degrade there lifestyle as well.
3) In the production phase there are various chemicals that are being used while production is what explained in the video. But the use of hazardous chemicals is altogether banned by the government. If the by-product or consumable goods are going to be free of such chemicals and the used chemical is completely recycled then only use of these kind of chemicals is allowed.
Secondly even though we are using the natural resources at an accelerated rate the production side is specifically instructed and in some cases there is compulsion to follow some rules. These rules makes the compulsion to make produce goods that are recyclable, if not complete then the part which is valuable and will put more strain on the planet resource should must be recycled. Due to such strict rules and regulations the production process is moving towards the goal mentioned and trying to reduce the strain on resources of planet.
