(3 points) f you were the economic advisor to the president what would your position be on universal health care? Make sure you make economic and not emotional arguments regarding health care. (4 points) Explain the rationale for free trade and why there are times when free trade is not beneficial. (Chapter 19) 1.Explanation / Answer
If I was the economic adviser to the president my position on the Universal health care would be for it. The reasons for supporting Universal Health Care would be to ensure that the benefits percolate towards all the sections of the society. These health benefits directly or indirectly affect the overall development of the nation. Good health is tied to improvement in education, employment, low-crime rates and social development, all of which guarantee long term stability of the nation. In other words, it is a means of achieving qualitative development. Presently in the US, healthcare benefits are tied to employment while in countries that are highly rated on the Human development Index there is availability of health care for all. It is economic as money for this can be collected through taxation and it can be placed under a scheme that loudly says Universal Health Care is for Making America Great Again. There is a growing debate in the US about whether the government is more than just for employment for Americans. Moreover, reports suggests that US is the highest spender in the health care sector and that implementation of Universal Health Care scheme would infact reduce the costs to the government. There may be several obstacles such as people's idea of individualism, interest groups and implementation, but implementation would cement the US' position as an advanced nation from the human development perspective.
