Spectral Feature Fitting (SFF) is an absorption-feature-based method for matching image spectra to reference spectra using a least-squares technique.

This method requires that a continuum must be removed from the reflectance data prior to analysis. A continuum is a mathematical function used to isolate a particular absorption feature for analysis. It corresponds to a background signal unrelated to specific absorption features of interest.

When we do continuum removal, we take the local maxima of the spectrum and fit a straight line between these points.

Continuum is the “background absorption” into which other absorption features are superimposed.

Explanation / Answer

Through SFF we use least square technique with which we can measure absorption feature depth whichbis related to material abundance. The brighter pixels in the image obtained indicate a better match to the reference material in those pixels. The image and reference spectra are compared at each wavelength in a least square sense. And the rms error is calculated for each reference spectra. Bybusing rms errors and scale image results we can locate areas that best match the reference spectrum
