Question

Watch the following two videos

The Meatrix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEkc70ztOrc)

The Meatrix II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAN6G8sBNIE&feature=related)

1) Using your knowledge of the energy pyramid, explain why more people can be fed if they eat grains and vegetables than if they eat a diet high in meat.

2) After viewing the two videos, describe and discuss one concern mentioned in the Meatrix videos about the way most of our meat in the US is produced on "factory farms."

3) Then use reliable sources (not Wikipedia) to check out the claim. List your source and discuss your findings (how it supports your discussion in #2). If possible, pick a concern not already discussed and you must select a unique source to check the claim.

Explanation / Answer

Energy pyramid:

Energy input vs out put from meat farms are far less comparable to plant based foods, because, in order to maintain meat farm and extract the meat, it involves lots of energy from feeding to packing. But , vegetables requires less energy input for farming and thus produces more output compared to its meat counter part.

2, Factory farming started around 20th century in order to produce more out put from less area, corporates started stacking, and locking animals in small cages, where they are wont have enough area to move around. The animals locked up in factory farms are living a life devoid of fresh air or water or food or even sunlight. These animals are also given antibiotics to maximize profit. Which can eventually create antibiotic resistant bacteria. Growth hormones like RBHG’s are also given in other to make them fat and grow faster. It is noted that by the end of 1950’s 2 million family farms are closed down.

3. Cows in the dairy industry can be given growth hormones in order to increase their milk production. Once their productivity declines, these cows are slaughtered for beef. The six growth hormones commonly used by the U.S. dairy industry have been shown to significantly increase the risk of breast, prostate, and colon cancer in beef consumers. Producers are not required to list the use of hormones on product labels. From farm sanctuary.com

Cow tails were thought to be the cause of an outbreak of leptospirosis among milkers, which is a disease caused by bacteria found in animal urine. Dairy producers in the U.S. got in on the practice in part because they believed docking also led to cleaner cows. – From UMKC.Wordpress

Also, it is to be noted that, H1N1 (Swine Flu) and Avian Flu, are communicable from animals to humans. These “zoonotic” diseases have the potential to become pandemics. Experts believe that the outbreak of H1N1 was likely caused by the overcrowding of pigs on factory farms and the storage of their waste in giant manure lagoons.
