Question
We sometimes think it is important to accept and accommodate the moral differences of another culture. For example, if you are visiting a country in which it is unacceptable to pat children on the head, or in which it is unacceptable for a female to touch or hand something to a monk, you’d likely accept and conform to these norms. But, sometimes we refuse to accept and accommodate moral differences. For example, many would argue that it is simply wrong for a culture to refuse to educate girls, or to practice female genital mutilation, and that we (in Western cultures) ought to try to change this.
Do you think it is true that there are cultural moral differences we should accept and accommodate, and others that we ought to challenge? What distinguishes these types of moral differences from each other?
Explanation / Answer
Ans. Yes it is true that there are some cultural diiferences we should accept and accomodate. Like in Arab world, there are many customs which are sacred to the people living there like wearing Hizab, not to kiss the ladies in front of others or in public and maintain minimum distances from other man's lady in public as well in private. Such indigeneous culture and customs we have to accomodate and accept.
While there are some customs or culture we ought to challenge such as child marriages, banning females from education, banning females from right to vote, freedom for females and equality of male and females, child labour and others. Such customes are contrary to present times and we should openly challenge such ortodox customs and cultures.
