Question 5) Science is useful in more situations than just astronomy. You get back to your apartment/house tonight after dark and flip the light switch closest to the door. The light does not go on. A) First, give me two different possible reasons why the light did not go on. Then, describe two tests you could perform that would be able to distinguish between your two reasons (in other words, give me two hypotheses and come up with two new observations to test those hypotheses). B) So far this semester we've talked about how to tell which idea is better, as well as which evidence is better. Now, which of your tests is more trustworthy/stronger/better than the other? Explain why.Explanation / Answer
Question 5: [A]. The two possible reasons why the light does not go on are:
1. I would first try to switch on a different light in the next room. And if that works maybe then I can come to a conclusion that there is some issue with this particular light in the front room. Then I will switch on my mobile torch and take out the light from holder into my hand and checkout all for all possible issues and if there are blackening ends and if I found any I can simply replace the bulb.
2. If the two different lights have the same issue and if they don't turn on then may be there is no electricity supply to the house. The best I could do is to check the main supply whether everything is perfect or not. And next I can look into the street to confirm there is no power supply to any house either.
B. Undoubtedly from my two reasons the first option would be better evidence because it may take sometime but definitely I can try my best to fix the things or at least I am able to test what is wrong with the light. There are many possible issues like maybe switch issue, light wasn't positioned properly in holder, starter might not be working, the tube got blackening ends which indicates it's time to replace a new light. So according my two reasons, the first idea would be better evidence because the tests conducted are trustworthy compared to second reason.
