1) What is a population pyramid and what can we tell from European population pyramids?

2) How does the Euronews video "The Economic Impact of Europe's Refugee Crisis" connect population issues and immigration issues (as well as economic issues), particularly in Germany? What argument does it make? Taking into account what you have learned about population trends in Europe (and particularly in Germany), what do you think about the video's argument about the role that immigrants can play?

Explanation / Answer

1)

Population pyramid, graphical representation of the age and sex compositionof a specific population. The age and sex structure of the population determines the ultimate shape of a population pyramid, such that the representation may take the form of a pyramid, have a columnar shape (with vertical sides rather than sloped sides), or have an irregular profile.

This population pyramid shows the distribution of the 503 million men and women in the European Union (based on the EU27 countries in 2012) by different age cohorts. The shape can be described as a ‘constrictive pyramid’, which is typical of developed societies with low fertility and mortality rates and with relatively older populations. The population aged 15–65 years is 335 million, whereas nearly one fifth of the total population is over 65 years old. There are only 78 million children aged 0–15. The male:female ratio in the EU is 0.95.

Asylum rules in Europe can cause confusion about the economic impact because it is often difficult to distinguish between genuine refugees and economic migrants but in case of Germany Out of more than one million refugees who arrived in Germany over the course of a year, 21,400 have found jobs, but only around 100 were hired by the 30 largest companies and germany is looking for effective refugee for companies and to atttain it the germany government earmarked 6 billion euros a year
