Question
Imagine you are mayor of a coastal town where some residents are employed as commercial fishers and others make a living serving ecotourists who come to snorkel and scuba dive at the nearby coral reef. In recent years, several fish stocks have crashed, and ecotourism is dropping off as fish disappear from the increasingly degraded reef. Scientists want to establish a marine reserve around portions of the reef, but most commercial fishers are opposed to this idea. What steps would you take to restore your community's economy and environment? Cite one external source to support your ideas. Some good examples of sources could include scholarly articles or sources like the NOAA, State Department's of Fish & Wildlife, National Geographic, etc... Should be at least 200 words.
Explanation / Answer
Coral reefs degarde due to bleaching or over fishing or sedimentation. I come up with a technique to restore the reefs.
The small coral fragments are aquacultured in special coral nurseries. Coral fragments are grown in that nursery till they attain suitable size for transplantation. This takes approx 100 to 400 days. Regular maintainence is needed to ensure algae shouldn't overgrow. Now these grown corals are transplanted into the degraded reefs to stimulate natural recovery and regeneration. It should restore the habitat complexity.
This can again bring back the previous situation
