Question
(a) Should the government impose regulations on Facebook and similar firms, or do you think Mark Zuckerberg and company can protect the public's privacy.
(b) Explain what you think will happen and why as a result of your response to question 2 above.
Based off this passage:
“It’s clear now that we didn’t do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well,” Zuckerberg said. “And that goes for fake news, foreign interference in elections and hate speech, as well as developers and data privacy.”
Facebook’s recent controversies have generated a rare level of bipartisan consensus about the power of social media to twist public discourse and jeopardize the functioning of democracies. Many lawmakers — Republicans and Democrats — are calling for new legislation, fines or greater regulation.
Thanks
Explanation / Answer
a) No government should not impose any rules and regulations on Facebook or other similar firms as if government is imposing regulations and rules they may try to use data of these sites for their own requirements. If that happens than people will not have privacy which is like leaking personal data but there are few positive effects where any anti social activity and many more can be avoided.
If Mark Zuckerberg and company is not able to protect public privacy why people will be still believing facebook and using that app. All these years they have protected and stil protecting public privacy.
B) In today's world where people will be addicted with social media where all people are sharing their info and opinion on this platform. The recent facebook controversies are said to be something which should be checked by the facebook team and try to aviia these type of situations as these effects the people opinion and their credibility. As people are believing that they will protect public privacy but if it is repeating the same mistake by these type of data leaking or pro political support than the firm should be accountable to public and than the government should regulate them.
