1) The king was in complete control may be it was nominally. He owned all the lands belongs to his territory and have authority to decide that to whom he would lease his land. He men who leased land from king were known as Barons. Then barron leased this land to an other person who was called to another person or group known as Knight. These knights had the obligation to provide protection and military services to the upper groups whenever required. These knights would also employ people known as villeins. These villein had obligation to provide food and services whenever demanded.
There are many difference between slave and bondservants like slavery may end in one generation but bond labour was transferred to the next generation. Also the bind labourer may have better life than a slave.
