Question

You are the head of an international granting agency that assists farmers? With soil conservation and sustainable agriculture.
You have $10 million to disburse. Your agency’s staff has decided that the funding should go to

(1.) farmers in an arid area of Africa prone to salinization,

(2.) farmers in southern brazil practicing no-till agriculture,

(3.) farmers in a dryland of Mongolia undergoing desertification.

What types of projects would you recommend funding in each of these areas, how would you apportion your funding among them, and why

Explanation / Answer

The maximum funds should be disbursed to the farmers in dryland of Mongolia undergoing desertification. The land is most difficult for agriculture and the produce is least, that is the yield goes on diminishing. The farmer needs funds to maintain the moisture in the soil and needs training to increase yield.

The farmers in an arid area of Africa should get next best importance as as to stop salinization of water. The area should get better drainage system so that the logged water do not mix with the soil and cause salinity.

The farmers practicing no-till agriculture should get the support for their effort to conserve soil and using siuatainable agricultural practices. they must be encouraged for promoting and practicing sustainable agriculture which causes least harm to the soil.
