For each photograph: 1. identify the location where the photograph was taken 2. name of the rock and its mineral constituents 3. state which major rock type (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) it belongs, identify any structures present (bedding/laminations, foliations, veins) interpret the conditions or environment of its formation 4. 5.

Explanation / Answer

Pic 1: Location: alongside a steep gradient gushy mountainous stream.

Name of Rock: Granite. Composition: mostly quartz and feldspar

Rock type: Igneous

Structure: Potholes and striations

It may have formed by magma intrusion and subsequent cooling. The sedimentary layer upon it may have been eroded by the gushy stream and now lay exposed.

Pic 2: Location: appears to be a construction site.

Name of Rock: No rock visible. Grey soil is seen with stone fragments. Composition: mostly clay and silt

Rock type: Sedimentary

Structure: No structure is visible

The picture is of grey soil mostly of silt and clay composition. It is formed by disintegration of silicate rich rocks and the subsequent deposition of clay rich sediments layer after layer to pile up the soil as seen. Post diagenesis, it would form sedimentary rock.

Pic 3: Location: ex situ pebbles along a countryside road.

Name of Rock: Si rich pebble. Composition: Mostly SiO2

Rock type: Sedimentary

Structure: None

The pebbles are formed by abrsion and rolling of parent rock by streams. The pebbels are then collected and deposited in the given location.
