I need help with a purification scheme for a lab write up. 2-butanol was reflexed then 1 ml of pentane was added to enhace the organic layer. 1.5 ml of saturated sodium bicarbonate was added to extract the organic layer. The the organic layer was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. I always seem to forget byproducts that are removed at each step. Explanation / Answer

You are probably refluxing this with HBr or HCl to give you the correspoing alkylhalide. If so, the bicrabonate is used to neutralize the remaining acid, and the sulfate is used to remove the water thatmight have come along with the organic layer.
