Read the excerpt from the song, “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?”
They used to tell me I was building a dream,
And so I followed the mob—
When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear
I was always there—right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream
With peace and glory ahead—
Based on this excerpt and your knowledge of American history, why did the stock market crash make Americans lose confidence in business?
Following the mob without asking questions can potentially lead to financial or emotional devastation.
People worked diligently to participate in the building of the American dream with the understanding they would profit.
The promise of peace and glory compelled many people to work for the wealthy and make them richer.
Instead of plowing the fields and going to war, American should have gone to college.
Explanation / Answer
America sometimes becomes so much motivated with financial and materialist growth that the illusion of money changes them from rationalist individuals to only illogical money seeking individuals. This illusion led bankers to decide emotionally , without any guaranteed speculations, and calculated casually on the creditworthiness of loan seekers. The loan seekers invested casually as the banks and the federal government approved casually. This casual nature of banker , loan seekers had become so common that they all were behaving same. The government took the situation as it was beneficial to the economy , the bankers thought of it as a financial gain, and loan seekers knew this was their business. However, the common peoples who followed the irrational , illogical understanding of the businesses in the stock market , based on such fraudulent nature, felt great , and acted as the mob. They all felt glorious as they found financially huge returns, but with no conscience or logical understanding of what everyone is doing or at least what he himself is doing. This illogical understanding formed the base for the concept of money earning, and based on that every individual was building a dream, a dream that he could have never achieved or fulfilled without such opportunities. But the fundamentals of stock investors were so poor that they had no knowledge of the whereabouts of the firms they invested into. These firms were showing the investors a promising future and thus a vibrant opportunity to build their dreams . The people expected peace and glory ahead with less work, more leisure. But as the stock market got crash, people lost their beliefs and understood how illogical and emotional they were. They understood that without work you can't get very long. Thus rather than investing into business its better to work. They lost confidence on businesses.
