Explanation / Answer

Let us select LinkedIn. The characteristics of this professional community are as follows:

LinkedIn is not the biggest or most talked about network these day, but when it comes to connecting with people who mean business and generating leads, few can compare to the power of LinkedIn. The power tool on LinkedIn is Groups. Groups can give access to people and discussions related to an industry, topic or even geographic region. Working LinkedIn Groups effectively is a solid way to build a network and generate leads. LinkedIn Groups provide a place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to share content, find answers, post and view jobs, make business contacts, and establish themselves as industry experts.

One might participate in a social media community as part of work as a consultant because it will have long-term financial gain; however, one might be friends with many of the other participants and also participate for social reasons to have fun doing it while also feeling like learning something. Usually one of these motivations is the primary reason that a person comes into a community as a first time user.

LinkedIn has been successful in creating a community because of the following strategies:

1. Create something worth building a community around

2. Identify and recruit

3. Assign one person the task of building a community

4. Welcome criticism

5. Publicize the existence of the community
