This discussion is in two parts. Complete each part, in separate responses, starting with Part 1. Briefly discuss your definition of plagiarism. Based on your definition of plagiarism, discuss which of the following will lead to plagiarism and which will not. Share an appropriate rationale for your selection. Writers during Shakespeare's era referred to him as "an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers" because Shakespeare often took what other playwrights wrote and incorporated that into his own plays. He also rarely created a plot line himself, but people come to see plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, King Lear, and even Julius Caesar as his own creations. Copyright laws did not exist in his time. Is he guilty of plagiarizing? Many religious texts have similar underlying messages. If you found a few examples of that and shared them, would you say those ideas were plagiarized? When musicians sample a song in their own piece, are they plagiarizing? Based on your selections, discuss which examples were easy to identify and which were difficult. For the difficult ones, what resources, other than textbooks, would you use to clear your doubts and misconceptions? Based on your responses in Part 1, revise your definition of plagiarism based on the ongoing discussion and finalize the definition of plagiarism as a group. Now, based on the final definition of plagiarism, discuss the answers of the following questions: What is plagiarism? What should the consequences for plagiarism be at college? What should the consequences for plagiarism be at work? What things can people do to avoid plagiarizing?

Plagiarism is literary, artistic or presentation theft of other peoples’ ideas, writings or performances, presenting them as one’s own for personal, monetary or economic gain.

This is the definition in its purest form. In practice , the courts have a narrower view.
