Question
Read the following ease study and orally answer the listed questions. You are a very good and popular surgeon in a very famous hospital in Dubai. You have been approached by a man claiming to be from a group that buys and sells human organs from people who have died. This man has told you that there are many people who will die unless they receive an organ transplant soon. He said that he knows a woman who needs a new liver. She will die within the next week if she doesn't receive a new liver, and you are her last hope. The man has said that he has a compatible liver, but only needs a good surgeon like you to perform the operation. He will pay you 100, 000 dirhams to perform the operation. He says that he also knows more people like this woman who need new organs and he will pay you 100, 000 dirhams for each operation. He says that these people have been on hospital and government waiting lists for organs for many years now and they are all close to dying. He says that without your help they will die. You have a lot of debt which needs to be paid off and the money would help you a lot. Without this extra money the bank will foreclose on your home that you bought a year ago. and you will have no other place to live. Your wife is threatening to divorce you, if you don't find a way to pay your debts. You suspect that this man is buying human organs illegally, but you think that probably no one would find out about it because you could do the operations at night with some other medical professionals who could help you. What do you do? Should you perform the operation and hope that no one finds out because you need the money? Should you perform the operation and hope that no one finds out to save the life of the woman who will die without your help? Should you tell him you won't do it and ignore what he is doing? Should you go to the government with your evidence of this illegal organ selling? Should you give your evidence to an Emirati human rights group anonymously? What are the implications of each option? (Who is affected? How are they affected? What are the possible results?) What do you believe is the best option? Why?Explanation / Answer
a) No, I would not perform the operation.
b) Growth of illegal activities have their impact on lives of people, for example if a patent drug to treat a disease is sold in another country at cheap price illegally, then the people researching for such drugs will not receive proper funds to make new drugs. And would put more lives in danger than saved.
c) I would tell him I won't do it and will tell him he is not doing the right thing.
d) I would not go to the government, I would try to tell him the that this activity is illegal and should be discontinued at once.
e) No I will not do that either. I would try to tell him the that this activity is illegal and should be discontinued at once.
f) If I perform the surgery, I put many people's lives in danger as explained in (b). And there is risk of getting my medical degree cancelled due if caught or even imprisonment.
If I do not perform the surgery, there will not be any legal obligation on me.
g) To not perform the surgery is the best option. Earning money illegally can be easy but it curtails economic growth and overall benefit of the society.
