Question

Clinical Concern Roger just celebrated his 40th birthday. He is about 40lbs heavier than he was on his 30th birthday. At his current rate of weight gain, he will be 80lbs overweight when he reaches age 50. Roger is 5’8” tall and weighs 210 lbs. He has three young children at home and works full-time as a salesperson. His day starts at 6am when he gets up and has breakfast with his wife and children. He spends most of the morning in his car traveling to visit his clients. He usually has at least one doughnut-and-coffee break. Lunch is fast food if he is alone or a restaurant meal if he is with clients. Most evenings he is home for dinner. By the time his children are in bed it is about 8pm. He sits down with his wife for a glass of wine or a bowl of ice cream. What is Roger’s BMI? How many pounds would he need to lose to get his BMI into the healthy range? If Roger loses weight at a healthy rate, how long should it take him to get his BMI back into the healthy range? Recommend at least three changes that Roger could make to reduce his calorie intake. Recommend an exercise program for Roger that fits his schedule. Should Roger consider weight loss surgery or drugs? Why or Why not?

Explanation / Answer

Obesity calculation:

Age: 40

Gender: Male

Height: 5.8 inches

Weight: 210 pounds

BMI = 31.93 kg/m2   (Obese Class I)

Normal BMI range: 18.5kg/m2 - 25 kg/m2

Normal BMI weight range for the height: 121.7lbs - 164.4 lbs

Ponderal Index: 18.49 kg/m3

1. What is Roger’s BMI?

ANS: Roger’s BMI = 31.93 kg/m2.

2. How many pounds would he need to lose to get his BMI into the healthy range?

ANS: According to the World Health Organization's (WHO) the normal BMI levels are in between 18.5 to 25 kg/m2 and the normal BMI weight range for the height is 121.7lbs - 164.4 lbs.

So roger need to lose around 50 to 60 lbs to get his BMI into the healthy range.

3. If Roger loses weight at a healthy rate, how long should it take him to get his BMI back into the healthy range?

ANS: It completely depends on physical activity and nutrition roger up taking.

Ex: Time required for losing 2 pounds a week for roger.

There are 3,500 calories in a pound; that’s 7,000 calories total (2 pounds) that you need to cut out or burn each week. That means that in order to lose 2 pounds every 7 days, you need to have a deficit of 1,000 daily.
The strategy is to get your daily deficit of 1,000 with a combo of diet and exercise. Ideally, that’s 500 extra calories burned daily, and 500 calories less eaten.

4. Recommend at least three changes that Roger could make to reduce his calorie intake.

ANS: Making dietary changes, exercising more and incorporating behaviour modification techniques these three changes can make to reduce roger calorie intake.

5. Recommend an exercise program for Roger that fits his schedule. Should Roger consider weight loss surgery or drugs? Why or Why not?

ANS: The best fat-loss workout is a mix of heavy training and cardio. I believe that training heavy is the best way to train when dieting for a few reasons.

Ex: Perform a 60-sec hill sprint or Perform 20 kneeling high cable crunches or Perform 20 lateral medicine ball wall tosses per side.

Roger was present in class 1 obesity, so doing weight loss surgery is a wrong decision.
