Question
Explanation / Answer
Ans1:
a. Gemfibrozil: It belongs to fibrates family. It inhibits the lipolysis and subsequently decrease hepatic fatty acid uptake and also inhibits hepatic secretion of very low-density lipoprotein. Together these actions decrease serum VLDL levels and increase HDL cholesterol.
b. Niacin : belongs to like fibrate category of lipid-lowering agents. It reduces bad cholesterol, the exact mechanism of action is unknown.
c. Lovastatin: It belongs to statin family. It functions by inhibiting 3 hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, which is an enzyme that catalyses the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. Mevalonate is a building block for cholesterol synthesis and lovastatin interferes with its production.
d. Cholestyramine: It is an adjuvant drug. It helps to treat primary hyperlipidemia. The exact mechanism is unknown. It also reduces bile obstruction.
