Impaired Spontaneous Ventilation
Impaired Swallowing
Care Giver Role Strain
Address the following:
Is the nursing diagnoses that you selected appropriate for the patient with a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre syndrome or both? Explain your answer.
Provide an outcome for the nursing diagnosis that you selected making sure that is specific to the needs of the patient with myasthenia gravis or Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Identify two (2) interventions that will help your patient with myasthenia gravis or Guillain-Barre syndrome reach the outcome for the nursing diagnosis.
Explanation / Answer
Myesthenia Gravis is a neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness of the skeletal muscle. Commonly affected organs were eyes, face and swallowing.
Gillian barre syndrome is also a neuromuscular disorder which affects the peripheral nervous system causing muscle weakness is the whole body.
Inspired swallowing is the nursing diagnosis which is applicable to both the disease condition. Myesthenia Gravis is manifested in swallowing difficulty and in Guillian barre syndrome , due to impaired functioning of the Peripheral nervous system there can be difficulty in swallowing.
Expected outcome is a positive statement which is specific, client oriented and measureable to ensure quality nursing care to the client.
Outcome statement for the above nursing is:
" the patient will be able to swallow safely as evidenced by absence of aspiration, coughing or choking during eating, no stasis of food in the mouth after ingestion.
The patient verbalised appropriate manuevers to prevent choking such as positioning during food intake, consistency of food to easy ingestion and safe environment during eating."
Two intervention to reach the outcome are as follows:
1. Position the patient upright at 90 degree angle with headflex at 45 degree angle. This position will prevent any aspiration of food and help in easy ingestion.
2. Place food on the unaffected side and consistency should by such that it'll be easy for ingestion. Apply adequate time for swallowing.
