Massachusetts law allowed the cities to require residents to get vaccination against small pox but the Jacobson refused this compliance and fined five dollars against it. The case was for the violation of the Jacobson's fourteen amendment right to liberty and the court gave conclusion that the law was a legitimate exercise of state's police to protect the public health and safety of it's citizens against the small pox. Thus the making the demand of vaccination was neither unreasonable nor arbitrarily imposed.
