Chapter 21, Problem 59

Two long, straight wires are separated by 0.120 m. The wires carry currents of 7.1 A in opposite directions, as the drawing indicates. Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at the points labeled (a) A and (b) B.

Your answer is partially correct. Try again. Chapter 21, Problem 59 Two long, straight wires are separated by 0.120 m. The wires carry currents of 7.1 A in opposite directions, as the drawing indicates. Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at the points labeled (a) A and (b) B.

Explanation / Answer

a) B1 = (10^-7)(2*7.1)[1/0.03 - 1/0.15] = 3.787*10^-5 T (coming out of the plane of figure)

(b) B2 = (10^-7)(2*7.1)[1/0.06 + 1/0.06] = 4.734*10^-5 T (going into the plane of the figure)

Formula Used B = (mu/4*pi)*[2I/r],
where mu = magnetic permeability of free space= 4*pi*10^-7 H m^-1; I is current in teh long straight conductor and r is perpendicular distance.
