Question

A 53 g block is released from rest and slides down a frictionless track that begins 2.7 m above the horizontal, as shown in the figure. At the bottom of the track, where the surfaceis horizontal, the block strikes and sticks to a light spring with a spring constant of 33 N/m.

Find the maximum distance the spring is compressed. The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .

Answer in units of m.

The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2 . Answer in units of m. See drawing attached.

Explanation / Answer

Here , We will use conservation of energy ,

let the compression of the spring be x m

then ,

0.5 kx^2 = mgh

0.5 * 33 * x^2 = 0.053 * 9.8 * 2.7

x = 0.292 m

the maximum distance spring is compressed is 0.292 m
