Question

A 5.5 kg object moving in the +x direction at 5.4 m/s collides head-on with an 8.2 kg object moving in the ?x direction at 3.2 m/s.
(Please include the steps of the solutions)

1)   Find the final velocity of each mass if the collision is elastic.
2)   Find the final velocity of the 8.2 kg object if the 5.5 kg object is at rest after the collision.
3)   Find the final velocity of the 5.5 kg object if the 8.2 kg object is at rest after the collision.
4)   Find the final velocity of the 8.2 kg object if the 5.5 kg object has a velocity of 3.2 m/s in the ?x direction after the collision.

Explanation / Answer

1) say m1 = 5.5 kg   u1 = 5.4 m/s   m2 = 8.2 kg   u2 = -3,2 m/s

for elastic collision

v1= (m1-m2) u1/(m1+m2) + 2m2u2/(m1+m2)

    =(5.5-8.2)*5.4 m/s /(5.5+8.2) + 2*8.2*(-3.2) (5.5+8.2) = -4.89 m/s

v1 = 4.89 m/s along negative x axis

v2 = (m2-m1)u2/(m1+m2) + 2 m1u1/(m1+m2)

= (8.2-5.5) *-3.2 /(13.7)   + 2*5.5 * 5.4 /13.7 = 3.70 m/s in positive x axis

2) there is some mistake in question objects ust be in rest initially before collission not after collision   in later question
