Question

An object is located 10 cm to the left of a converging lens that has a radius of curvature of 30 cm. Use the lens's equation to calculate the image distance from the lens (di). Find the distance between the image and the object. Calculate the magnification of the image and state whether the image is real or virtual; upright or inverted; and enlarged, reduced, or the same size as the object. If the height of the image h1 = 5cm, find the height of the object (ho) Construct a ray diagram for this arrangement to locate the image. (Use a graph paper to draw three rays from the object to determine the location of the image). From your drawing, determine the image distance and show that it is consistent with what you found in part a.

Explanation / Answer

lens formula: 1/f = 1/v -1/u

f = 30/2 cm = 15cm.

u = -10cm

on calculating, v = -30cm i.e. image wil form on the left side of te lens.

b) Distance between the mage and theobject is (30-10)cm = 20cm.

c) magnification m = -v/u

     m = 30/(-10) = -3 i.e. image is inverted, enlarged.

d) m = hi/h0

ho = hi/m = -5/3cm.
