Question
A group of 7 people come into the emergency room. They had been at a company picnic two or three hours earlier and had all enjoyed healthy servings of the cream puff pastries. Now, they were experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. None of them have a fever, however. The doctor tells them that they will just have to wait it out because there is nothing they can do, and they are all otherwise healthy adults, so it should pass relatively quickly, within 8 hours or so. What did the people have? What was the likely causative agent?
Explanation / Answer
Among them the abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea was mainly caused due the cream puff pastries food poisoning (gastroenteritis). Generally the gastroenteritis was caused by parasites, bacteria, or viruses. The stomach flu is called as viral gastroenteritis and the bacterial gastroenteritis is called as food poisoning. In the most of cases the food poisoning does not occur very often, in the mild cases no treatment is required from a doctor.
During the diagnosis process at first doctor ask the patient about symptoms and examine the stomach and chest. The tender or sensitive area of the abdomen was found through pressing different areas of stomach. At the final based on the symptoms doctor can prefer following tests Endoscopy, Blood test, Helicobacter pylori infection diagnose test, X-rays, Liver function test, Abdominal ultrasound and Abdominal CT (computed tomography) scan for further diagnosis.
But in this case they are in mild stage of infection so the doctor tells them that they will just have to wait it out because there is nothing they can do, and after some they will become good
