Question

Find an example of a specific health message in a TV program of your choice (i.e. perhaps a hospital drama has an episode about organ donation, or a teen drama has an episode about condom failure). Provide a description of how the health issue is presented in the program and be sure to cite the program.

Specifically answer EACH of the following questions:

Which members of the viewing audience do you think this message is directed towards? (ie. teenagers, parents, women, the elderly, etc.)

Do you think this health message has the potential to influence the intended audience's perspectives and/or health behavior?  Argue why you think the health message in the program may or may not be influential based on the theory and research covered in the lectures and your text.  It is essential that you support your position with citations from the text and/or lectures.

Do you think the influence is likely to be positive or negative? Why? Support with evidence from your text or lectures and cite your sources.

Explanation / Answer

Teen drama about a condom failure:

The message will be directed towards the teenagers and also the women. The fact that condoms can fail by breaking or slipping even if used correctly. I am wondering whether the 2% risk of pregnancy is entirely accounted for by breakage or slippage, or whether there is some other mechanism by a which someone can get pregnant even if the condom is used correctly, does not break open, and does not slip. (and if there is such an alternate mechanism, how likely is it to happen).High failure rates in some studies occur because many people over-report contraceptive use to shift the responsibility for an unintended pregnancy to a “faulty” contraceptive.Awareness should be created to teenagers especially regarding the proper use of condom as it results in pregnancy and it is not their age to have such big responsibilities.

Health message should be given not only in care of pregnancy but also to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.The emergence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and identification of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as a co-factor have revived the interest of the scientific community in condoms. The partners who consistently used condoms had a near zero risk of HIV, while inconsistent use carried considerable risk averaging to about 14–21%.Although many people mistakenly assume that all men know how to correctly use condoms, incorrect use is common and is a major cause of condom failure.Incorrect condom use is a common problem that can undermine their prevention impact.

The influence is likely to be positive which shows the diverse set of risk factors for condom use problems at the individual, partner and partnerships levels.Such kind of health awareness shows in television might help the adolescent population to gain knowledge in pros and cons of condom failure.
