Question

1- Faraday's investigations led him to discoveries that still influence our live every day. In your own words (not

equations), what was his main idea? [1 mark ]

2- Lenz's Law states that an induced current caused by changing flux always flows to oppose the change.

Looking at Figure 25.12, which way will the current flow in the loop as the magnet is lowered? [1 mark ]

3- Maxwell's Laws are a set of equations that tell us how a changing magnetic field can create an electric field

and vice-versa. Maxwell used this to suggest the existence of electromagnetic waves.

A cell phone emits microwave radiation to communicate. A typical value of the peak electric field is about 50

V/m. What is the peak magnetic field?

Pushing a bar magnet toward the loop induces a current in the loop. Pushing a bar magnet toward a loop increase the flux through the loop and induces a current to flow. Does the induced current flow clock wise or counter clock wise?

Explanation / Answer

1. Faraday said that when a magnetic field interacts with an electric fiels it produces an electromotive force(EMF).

2. The current will flow in counterclockwise dorection to oppose the magnetic field created by magnet.

3. The realtionship between electric and magnetic field is B(max) = E(max) / Velocity of light. Here B(max) = 50/(3*10^6) = 1.67 * 10^(-5) Tesla.
