Question
Two plane mirrors, nearly parallel, are facing each otherd1 = 2.5m apart as in (Figure 1) . You standd2 = 1.5m away from one of these mirrors and look into it. You will see multiple images of yourself.
a) How far away from you is the first image of yourself in the mirror in front of you? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
b) How far away from you is the second image of yourself in the mirror in front of you? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
c) How far away from you is the third image of yourself in the mirror in front of you? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Explanation / Answer
(a)
the first image is from a single reflection so it will be
d1 = 2 D
= 2 (1.5 m)
= 3m away
b)
the second image is from two reflections so it will be
d2 = L + d + D
= 2.5 m + 1 m +1.5 m
= 5m away
c)
the third image is from three reflection so it will be
d3 = 2 L + D + D
= 2 (2.5 m) + 1.5 m+ 1.5 m
= 8m away
