Question

A closed bottle with a volue of 2.10 L contains ethane gas at a temperature of 305 K and atmospheric pressure 1.013x105 Pa.

(a) Find the number of moles of ethane gas in the closed bottle.

(b) Now the lid of the bottle is removed and the bottle containing the gas is warmed to a temperature of 395 K (bottle is now open to the atmosphere). Find the number of moles of ethane gas remaining inside the bottle.

(c) The bottle is then closed, and cooled to its original temperature. What is the final pressure of the gas in the bottle?

Explanation / Answer

a)

PV = nRT

1.013*10^5*2.1*10^-3 = n*8.314*305

n = 0.084 mol

PV = nRT

1.103*10^5*2.1*10^-3 = n*8.314*395

n = 0.065 mol

c)

PV = nRT
P*2.1*10^-3 = 0.065*8.314*305

P = 0.782*10^5 Pa
