Question

A long, thin wire carrying 5.2 nC/m runs down the center of a long, thin-walled, hollow pipe with radius 1.0 cm carrying -4.7 nC/m spread uniformly over its surface. (Assume the positive direction is radially away from the axis of the pipe.)

(a) Find the electric field 0.50 cm from the wire. [units should be kn/C] I got this correct, 18.7 kn/C

(b) Find the electric field 1.5 cm from the wire. [units should also be kn/C]

I tried using E=lambda/2pi(permability constant)(0.005m) for a and got it right, but I keep getting b wrong, help!

Explanation / Answer

E=(lambda1+lambda2)/2pi(permability constant)(0.015m)=(5.2n-4.7nc)/(2pi(permability constant)(0.015m))=0.59935 kn/C

you will got the right answer...............at 1.5 cm.......we are outside the cylinde and wire both for only cylinder=E=(lambda2)/2pi(permability constant)(0.015m)
