Question
Find out whether the reaction occurs spontaneously and what the free energy of the reaction is. The reaction can be written as:3-phosphoglycerate -----> 2-phosphoglycerate
You add the enzyme that catalyzes this reaction to a solution of 3-PG and are given the following information:
a) 25° C and pH 7, the equilibrium ratio (Keq) is 0.165.
b) The Keq = [2-PG]/[3-PG] = 0.165
c) Experimentally, the actual steady-state concentrations of these compounds in a live cell are 61 µM for 3-PG, and 4.3 µM for 2-PG.
Based on this information:
at 25° C and pH 7, if you hold [3-PG] steady at 61 µM but slowly increase [2-PG], how high can you raise [2-PG] until the reaction (in part 2 above) is no longer thermodynamically feasible and it stops?
