Question

A moving body changes its velocity when a net force acts on it. A body that is initially at rest moves when a net force acts on it. Using a recording timer, the spacing of the dots on the paper tape pulled by the cart shows clearly whether the cart moves with a constant speed or with an acceleration. The regularly spaced dots mean motion with a constant speed; the increasing spaces between dots indicate accelerated motion. A stopwatch can also be used to determined the time needed to travel a given distance. A shorter time of travel for the same distance means higher speed, longer time means lower speed. Objectives: 1. To define net force 2. To determine the net force acting on a body 3. To relate net force and the acceleration of a body 4. To apply Newton

Explanation / Answer

1. Record the values in a table and for computing the average speed , we take total distance/total time

2. In such a case, the cart will move due to its own weight,mg and friction such that the two cancel out and it moves with constant velocity

3. Each hanging mass is applying a force on the cart through the string and will cause its movement. They will be used to determine F=ma relationship

4.Average speed= total distance /total time

Average acceleration= change in velocity/change in time

5. You will need to make a table first by recordng the values as above.
