Question 8 help
A 69.0-kg person throws a 0.0455-kg snowball forward with a ground speed of 32.5 m/s. A second person, with a mass of55.5 kg, catches the snowball. Both people are on skates. The first person is initially moving forward with a speed of 2.15 m/s,and the second person is initially at rest. What are the velocities of the two people after the snowball is exchanged? Disregard the friction between the skates and the ice. (Take the direction the snowball is thrown to be the positive direction. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.)
thrower:___________________________m/s
catcher:___________________________m/s
Explanation / Answer
Momentum is conserved.
About the 1st person and the snowball, momentum before = momentum after
69.0455 kg*2.15 m/s = 69.0 kg*V1 + 0.0455 kg*32.5 m/s
69.0 kg*V1 = 69.0455 kg*2.15 m/s - 0.0455 kg*32.5 m/s = 146.97 kg.m/s
V1 = 146.97 kg.m/s / 69.0 kg = 2.13 m/s
And about the 2nd person, momentum before = momentum after
55.5 kg*0 + 0.0455 kg*32.5 m/s = 55.0455 kg*V2
V2 = (0.0455 kg*32.5 m/s) / 55.0455 kg = 0.0269 m/s
