Question
A 0.5kg model rocket is on a cart that is rolling to the right at a speed of 4m/s . The rocket engine, when it is fired, exerts an 9.0N thrust on the rocket. Your goal is to have the rocket pass through a small horizontal hoop that is 25m above the launch point. At what horizontal distance left of the loop should you launch?
Note: The follow are not correct answers: 6.9m, 7m, 18m.

Given
mass of model racket (m)= 0.5kg
thrust generated by rocket (f) = 9.0 N
speed of the cart = 4m/s
acceleration generated upward by rocket a = f/m = 9/0.5 = 18 m/sec2
as the gravitational force is acting in opposite direction resultant acceleration = a' = a - g = 18 - 10 = 8
time taken to reach a height of 25 m (t) = sqrt(2*h/a) = sqrt(50/8) = sqrt(6.25) = 2.5 sec
as the car moving at 4 m/s
distance travelled by cart in 2.5 sec = 4*2.5 = 10m
Hence the rocket has to be launched 10 meters from the left of the loop
