Question

Approximately what magnitude force, FM, must the extensor muscle in the upper arm exert on the lower arm to hold a 6.6-kg shot put (Figure 1) ? Assume the lower arm has a mass of 3.0kg and its CG is 12cm from the elbow-joint pivot.

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

Fm = Force of Muscle; Fe = Force Elbow; Fb = Force Ball

Sum Force about Joint = (-2.5)Fm + 12Fe + 30Fb = 0

2.5 is negative because i assume center at the elbow so in downwad direction it will be negative

(-2.5)Fm + 12(3) + 30(6.6) = 0

Fm = 93.6kg

Fm = 96.8 * 9.8 = 917.28N
