11. A block of mass 10 kg is pushed a distance of 10 m by a 14.1 N force applied to the block at an angle of 45 degrees, as shown in the adjacent figure. How much work is done by this gravity in this movement? Note, components of applied force provided in figure. 12. A spring gun is used to accelerate a projectile of mass 0.002 kg. The spring is compressed by 0.1 m and has a spring constant of 1000 N/m. After the spring is released, what is the speed of the projectile after it has left the gun? Neglect friction.

Explanation / Answer

11.

The displacement is along horizontal, but not towards earth. This mean the displacement towards Earth is zero. Thus the work done by the gravitational force is zero

12.

0.5mv^2 = 0.5kx^2

v = sqrt [kx^2/m]

   = sqrt [(1000)(0.1)^2/(0.002)]

   = 71 m/s
